Summary

'The horror, whatever it was, had not yet entirely spoiled that marvellous beauty'

Enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, Dorian Gray exchanges his soul for eternal youth and beauty。 Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life, indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society。 Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence。 The Picture of Dorian Gray was a succès de scandale。 Early readers were shocked by its hints at unspeakable sins, and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895。

This definitive edition includes a selection of contemporary reviews condemning the novel's immorality, and the introduction to the first Penguin Classics edition by Peter Ackroyd。

A really great plot with many unique philosophical conversations among the characters。 It's like combining Shakespeare's romance, Sherlock Holmes's crimes, and Jane Austen's conversations all in one story。 A really great plot with many unique philosophical conversations among the characters。 It's like combining Shakespeare's romance, Sherlock Holmes's crimes, and Jane Austen's conversations all in one story。 。。。more

this book attacked me and I loved it

Some parts were so detailed and just info dumping and I honestly had a hard time getting through these parts but for some reason I still really loved this book。 I'll definitely reread it at some point。 Some parts were so detailed and just info dumping and I honestly had a hard time getting through these parts but for some reason I still really loved this book。 I'll definitely reread it at some point。 。。。more

Read at your own risk for you might end up falling in love with Oscar Wilde。

Insanely interesting and refreshingly gay。 I have never read a book that so aggressively makes you think about it and about art。 The more pretentious version of Jekyll and Hyde。

I was pleasantly surprised by how many times I laughed while reading this book。 And I mostly blame Lord Henry Wotton :)。 I had expected some dark humor, but mostly a very dark subject matter, and it was。 But even on a lighter note, it was funny, or at least it had it's moments, and that felt so refreshing。 There are so many details and layers, definitely a book worth re-reading。 A MISERABLE JOY-RIDE :D I was pleasantly surprised by how many times I laughed while reading this book。 And I mostly blame Lord Henry Wotton :)。 I had expected some dark humor, but mostly a very dark subject matter, and it was。 But even on a lighter note, it was funny, or at least it had it's moments, and that felt so refreshing。 There are so many details and layers, definitely a book worth re-reading。 A MISERABLE JOY-RIDE :D 。。。more

Wow。 Just。。。 wow。I'm not a fan of classics but some books were really good from this genre (for example The Great Getsby) so I decided to give this one a try。 It was actually a quote I've seen somewhere that made me read it and I've never been so grateful。Oscar Wilde's mind must have been a haunted and yet beautiful place。 The picture of Dorian Gray is a piece of wonderful art and Wilde's writing something I've never seen before。 Wow。 Just。。。 wow。I'm not a fan of classics but some books were really good from this genre (for example The Great Getsby) so I decided to give this one a try。 It was actually a quote I've seen somewhere that made me read it and I've never been so grateful。Oscar Wilde's mind must have been a haunted and yet beautiful place。 The picture of Dorian Gray is a piece of wonderful art and Wilde's writing something I've never seen before。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 was not expecting to find myself making lots of commentary (good and bad) on the characters’ train of thoughts。 thought dorian would be superficial but he’s actually quite layered。 loved the last section leading up to the ending; a much needed conclusion imo。 enjoyed it overall。

Wow wow WOW!! I cannot imagine ever reading anything else that will top this。 My new favourite。 I’m speechless。
